Description: The ASA assigned to the assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) grant position in the Behavioral Health Unit helps those who are suffering from serious mental illness, as well as those who care for them in the community. This federally funded grant, administered in collaboration with Cook County Health and Hospital Systems, funds an assisted outpatient treatment program designed to assist persons suffering from serious mental illness, who may also have history of hospitalization due to non-compliance with medication and treatment. The grant is intended to increase public safety and decrease future hospitalization and incarceration of participants, by providing them consistent access to, and assistance in maintaining, a proper treatment program. Court oversight and accountability for non-compliance, fosters participant ownership in the process and treatment goals.
Duties/Responsibilities:
The ASA assigned to this position facilitates, promotes, advances and manages the cause of this much needed program by working with a variety of stake holders: grant administrators, medical personnel, doctors, nurses, counselors, social workers, law enforcement personnel, custodians, family members, treatment providers, residential program providers, court personnel, judges, clerks, ASAs, and public and private attorneys.
ASA works with the involved parties in the treatment process to create the Agreed Court Order. Order provides for mental health treatment and services on an outpatient basis. The Order is presented to a mental health judge who approves or rejects it after accepting testimony. The case is then placed on a court call where each participant is monitored by the court to see if they are complying with treatment and services. The ASA is responsible for creating the Order, filing the Order with the court clerk and presenting testimony at the hearing for the Order. The ASA is responsible for managing the weekly court call and providing the court, and other interested parties, with updates on the participant’s progress, as well as providing notice of court proceedings. ASA also travels to various locations throughout the county and provides trainings to interested parties about the AOT program.
